Recommendations for newbie

My company has put me in charge of the Nagios project. I have started reading about Nagios and have a couple of questions from you all. My company's feeling for the base Linux is to use Redhat. From what I see there are quick installs for other versions of Linux but not Redhat. Does Nagios Core (this is the direction we are going) have compatibility problems with Redhat?

Thank you for the information. We will be discussing it today and I do not know how senior management will feel when it comes to cost. With that in mind, what would be the next Linux recommended base install be?

CentOs would be next. There are number of people on the forums who use fedora, ubuntu, and suse as well. I myself run core on different flavors of gentoo. Core runs fine on most distros though, and you would be best off installing on a platform you already know. If you are demoing core for a potential nagiosXI purchase, running it on rhel or cent would be a good idea as those are the supported systems for XI. What distro is favored in your environment?

At present there is none. That is what I am here to design. They have the idea, it's mine to create. I look forward to working with the "experts" here to assist me in my endeavor.

I would agree with Andy, it's recommended however, to start with Centos / RHEL, not because there is anything wrong with the other distro's it's just that all of our documentation is tuned for those two distro's. That being said there are many MANY guides out there, and on our site's which help guide you through everything from the fist commands you need to run to install, to setting up multi level distributed environments. Naturally Nagios XI is a lot easier to get into because of wizards, and the ease of changing your configuration files from a web based UI instead of the command line. Just let us know what you need!
