Nagios Update not working

I installed the upgrade. We are not having network connectivity issues. It appears that things are just randomly not working. For instance, we have hosts that we can reach and read services off of, but it reports that certain services are unknown. However, the same service on another host shows up fine (and our services are setup globally and then assigned to hosts or host groups, not setup individually by host). It's been restarted, rebooted, etc. etc. The check_nt commands fail, but we can telnet to the port. It's all very strange.

OK, I think I see what the problem is. Apparently on this new build it is not using the _PORT variable, which is what we use to punch through firewalls for remote checks. Regardless of what that variable is set to, it puts 12489 in the check. Because the 1st server we setup in any site is 12489, most of the hosts are showing up as being online because it's able to read the basic information off of them. So if we have 10 servers behind a firewall, only 1 of them, the one listening on 12489, is replying to every check request. How do we get this to acknowledge the _PORT variable again?
