Best way to monitor a single windows server?

Post by msimmons »

I really only need something to alert me when my Avg Disk Queue Length stays high for a duration of time. Does Nagios need to be installed on a separate server?

You can add the Avg. Disk Queue Length performance counter on your windows box if you haven't done it, yet. Then run the Windows Server Wizard. In the Step 3 of the wizard, you can specify which performance counters you would like to monitor. There are some examples that you can use on this page.

Yes but where do I actually install Nagios? " Nagios XI can only be installed on a RHEL or CentOS Linux server. " It sounds like I would need a separate machine? Is that correct?

Nagios XI needs to be installed on one of those linux distrobutions. You can use a VM loading program to "play" one of our pre-configured virtual machines, or install from source as noted above. These options are all listed here, and there are basic installation guides available:

Yes, Nagios is not a Windows based software package, though it can be run from a Windows system as I had mentioned. Leaving open for a reply if one is warranted.
