Nagios XI demo VM: license immediately expired?

Post by lyle »

Hello all:

Within the past week, I downloaded the XI demo VM and installed it on ESX.

I just started configuration, but when I used the Wizard to add the first monitored client, I immediately got a "License Exceeded" message. The banner at the top of the page says "This trial copy of Nagios XI has expired".

The file I downloaded is named: nagiosxi-2009r1.3g-vmware.zip and dated 11/23/2010 on my machine.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to get a demo up asap. Sale of an ulimited XI license rests on the demo.

Thanks...Lyle Ryan

You may want to check the date/time on your ESX server and make sure the time settings are correct.

Thanks, but date and time in VM are ok.

I'm still dead in the water.

Thanks for any added help on this. No demo, no sale.

I just downloaded it to check here, and confirmed that it worked properly for me. One other possibility I can think of is if you did the initial setup in VMware Player on your workstation before converting it to ESX and had different times on your workstation and the ESX server. Otherwise, is this reproducible for you if you download the image again?

We double checked the VM this morning, as of yet we haven't been able to recreate your issue.

So when you initially installed and logged in, was the interface saying your trial had expired, or did that change after the Wizard was run?

What wizard did you attempt to run?

I believe that after installing the VM and starting, I changed it's IP, domain, /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts. Then I used the Wizard to add one (solaris) host, and when the Wizard exited I got the "License Exceeded; you have exceeded your license limits; upgrade your licenses to access this feature and obtain support services" page. Just under the toolbar is an orange warning "The trial copy of Nagios XI has expired. Purchase a License Now or enter your license key"

But I think this is the answer: Under "System Config" > "License Information", I just now chose License Type "Free" and clicked "Update Key". The License Key "updated successfully", and I'm on the road.

Maybe I missed the license key setup instructions for the free demo some where. Sorry, if that's the case.

Glad you got it working! I'm not sure what our most recent instructions say for setting up the trial version, but I'm glad you posted your solution, because this would have had me stumped and looking for something much more complicated than it actually was. Let us know if you hit any more roadblocks.
