Templates

Post by jurgen »

Hi,

I've got a number of mostly-identical devices that I'd like to monitor identically. I've created a host template and a handful of service templates, and they're working fine. To monitor a new device, I make a new host, apply the template, then make new services, applying that host and the correct service template. There must be an easier way! Why can't I specify services in the host template? Is there another feature someplace that I'm not seeing?

Thanks

Host templates effect host objects settings. Service templates effect service object settings. Its apples to oranges. Applying services on the host template would break down the object division between hosts and services. This is why separate templates/groups/primary objects exist. It's for the logic and the logic is for it.

OK, thanks, so I guess I'm asking the wrong question.

What's the best way to start monitoring several dozen identical devices, differing only by IP address?

If the checks and alert thresholds will be the same for all the devices, my suggestion would be to create the service checks and add them to a hostgroup. Add your devices to the hostgroup as well and then they will inherit the service checks.

Oooh. I didn't know you could do that. I like that a lot. Thanks!
