That is all you have? Is nagios running? Do you see all the green checkmarks at the top of your interface? Or are some of them red / blue?

Yes... some entries regarding service start and then only Auto-save entries...
checkmarks are all green

Are you seeing the checks in /var/log/messages? Specifically a "tail -f /var/log/messages" might help to best show this.

same messages of nagios.log
I changed debug level in nagios.cfg to -1 and so I can see checks in /usr/local/nagios/var/spool/checkresults but they are often overwritten so I have to figure out how to get them persistent!

They should not be overwritten, but removed after being reaped. The names are pseudo random, so they may look like the same names, but they should not be.
