Suggests using the network (that isn't working) to download a tool to fix the non-working network. Not all that helpful.
Can someone point out the files that need to be updated so that I can edit them manually?

It is not meant as a tool to fix your networking, but alter it. What are you trying to do here?

Setup IP, netmask, gateway, DNS, hostname, etc. Everything that needs to be done if the VM is in a subnet without a DHCP server. This is the ESX appliance that I downloaded; I'm trying to get it working.

You will need to configure your server for a static ip. See the following links:
