Load issues

I am currently running the evaluation version of Nagios XI, and we are experiencing a lot of alerts about local host being critical (CRITICAL - load average: 18.30 21.19 22.88). I used the pre-installed VMware image and I attached the installation profile. I already ran through this guide (http://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nagi ... rmance.pdf), and it didn't help much. I monitor 78 hosts and 913 services total.

What could I do to make it run better?

What kind of hardware is the VM running on? How many cores / how much memory is dedicated to the VM? Have you considered using Mod Gearman? Also, how frequently are checks going out from the XI server? Are you using mostly active checks? If so what are they?

The hardware it's running on is a ESXi host on a Dell PowerEdge 2850, running ESXi 4.1.0, 4 CPUs x 2.793 GHz. The VM is "VM Version 7", 3 cores, 2048MB RAM. Mod Gearman sounds interesting, but for now I'd rather try to run on one VM.

There are about 913 active checks going on in the next 5 minutes, and almost all of them are SNMP and ping.

Ah yes, active SNMP checks anywhere can take more resources than others. I'd definitely look at Mod Gearman, it can be a great asset, and you can even install it on the local nagios server if you do not want to dedicate others for the worker system.
