I would suggest that you use the xi backup script, and then proceed to migrate the tarball to a newly configured server/vm with a fresh XI install.

I would also suggest that nothing destructive be performed to the old server until the new one has been tested successfully.

Is there a change of architecture as well (32bit to 64bit)?

I managed to moved NagiosXI to the different machine. I would like to know what parameters should I check to ensure that Nagios has been setup correctly. Please let me know what info do you need so that I can supply it to you.

First, check your status details in XI. If all your checks are coming in on time without errors, then the checks retained the proper configuration and plugins.
Next, check your performance data by viewing graphs for various services to see if they are all populating correctly.
Finally, I would send some custom notifications for a range of objects to verify that alerts are still working correctly.

I'd also recommend running an apply configuration after making a simple change to a object to ensure the database can read/write properly.
