I'd take a look at this documentation, here:

Linux Journal did a pretty good article on this:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10605

They suggest the MultiTech Systems MultiModem iSMS Intelligent SMS Server for reasons best explained in the article.

If you don't need (or can't afford the cost of) a separate band for SMS, many carriers offer e-mail-to-SMS gateways. Wikipedia had a list of them. That page has been deleted, but it's still available in the Google cache: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... =firefox-a

In this case, for example, the pager contact address for a phone on Verizon would be: Note that with this method, though, if for whatever reason Nagios can't get e-mail messages out (your mail server is down, or your wired connection's been dug up by a backhoe, your Nagios host's ethernet cable gets unplugged, etc.), you won't receive the SMS.

cbeattie is correct for the reasons mentioned. One note: SMS email gateways tend to be locked down a bit more than other email servers. You may need to have an fqdn or change your sender/from email address to be legitimate (no root@localhost or [email protected] etc.). It varies from carrier to carrier, so you may need to consult your mail logs (and potentially your carrier) to troubleshoot if the email is bouncing.
