Easier way to filter services and add to SvcGrp

Post by vAJ »

I'm needing to create service groups for specific disk service checks on a large number of like servers.

Think 600 web servers with identical disk configuration, and I need to be able to Top XX for each C:, D:, etc. The best way I can think to do this at this point, is to put all like drive service checks in their own service group and build a view/dashboard showing the TopXX for each SG. Problem is, with the existing UI, going through and picking out 600x5 service checks and adding to a SG is a bit laborious.

Any ideas for getting this done faster?

TIA,
AJ

If the services are not set up with different command values I see no reason why you cannot just grab those 5 services, then assign them to a service group, and assign that service group to your hosts.

Yeah, that's the same thought I had. But they are existing services that I'm not certain of any threshold variances.

I'm working to get sign-off from involved parties to say this global change is OK.

If I remember from some of the other single-host to group assignment changes I've made, I can retain the historical data. If I apply a service check to a group where that check already exists applied to individual hosts, then remove the individual checks in CCM, the historical data will be retained, correct?

I will have to take a look and see how they react, I believe, that as long as the service name stays constant this should be the case. Don't quote me on that though, until it is verified. I suppose it would be easy to test in your environment too. Let us know!

I've verified it. It's working for me.

I did some tests on a test setup and then verified in production. Looks good.

Now with the ServiceGroups built for each like drive letter, I can take filtered sets from the "Metrics" screen and build a comprehensive dashboard for TopXX disk usage in this large environment.

Thanks

Sure. I'm thinking through some feature requests as a result of this issue. Good things that I think XI users would be pleased with.

Great! Just send them over to:

tracker.nagios.com

From there we can look through them and possibly add some to our internal development tracker.
