So ....I checked the mrtg.cfg and found that is was messed up. I replaced it, deleted the rest of the mrtg.cfg, cleaned up the scan files, deleted the checks and host, deleted rrd files...

Now on a 20 port switch the scan returns 3 ports when 20 are up and administratively up. There are current rrd files for all ports, the mrtg. tests perfect but I am missing 17 ports.

So...I did it all over again and removed the switch wizard(again) and replaced it with another one that worked on a large project I did....and it happened all over again...3 ports out of 17.

However, the ports do have bandwidth checks so I guess that is something.

I am going to upgrade the system on Friday to 2012R2.8c and see if that will help.

Am I understanding correctly, only 3 of the services are created, or only 3 of the ports are being added to the mrtg config?

When you run the wizard, how many show up in the list after scanning ports?

So I have repeatedly cleaned and set this up to determine what the problem is.

The Cisco SM300 with 20 ports shows up correctly when scanned(all ports are visible) but repeatedly only three ports are show in XI. I have verified that all has been cleaned and mrtg file is in new condition before each attempt.

I have set up two other switches and routers and today I checked the traffic.

1. all ports show 0 bytes of traffic on all ports across 3 different devices (some of these ports have heavy traffic)
2. the Cisco 20 port switch only shows 3 ports in the web interface but all ports are in the mrtg.cfg, all ports have rrd files. AND all ports are in the Bandwidth usage report but no traffic is recorded on any ports

So at this point it looks like mrtg is not building data correctly.

I just wanted to confirm from above, have you upgraded to 2012r2.8c? I believe this should finally fix it.

Upgrading to 2012R2.8c did not solve this problem. However, I have solved it by removing everything related to MRTG and rebuilding it by hand and verifying each step and installing a new wizard to replace the broken one.

Just to make sure that 2012R2.8c was OK I built a new machine and installed and it worked fine. I also installed Nagios 4.02 and MRTG and testing all routers and switches to make sure all Nagios machines were working properly with MRTG.

Anyway...spending too much time with MRTG lately but I have once again learned the hard way how stuff works.
