So for an unknown trap, could I just add that trap to SNMPTT to have it recognize? What about trap counters? Would those work as well? Would that also be the place that I fix the text for a trap so Nagios shows something meaningful?
What about doing INFORMS instead of TRAPS? Is there just a option I enable (I did not see it in the conf file).

Yes most anything added to snmptt.conf will generate an event to be sent to nagios. I would however suggest loading the mib via the addmib command so that it is formatted properly. As for snmpv3 traps, I have yet to actually test this, but the net-snmp docs seem to have a pretty good outline of what might need to be done here: http://www.net-snmp.org/tutorial/tutori ... ap-v3.html
