these are Contacts added in Configure/Alerting/Contacts.

The "From" address should work for Nagios XI users (created by going to: Admin->Manage Users->Add New User). If you need to set up the same functionality for "contacts only", you would need to modify your MTA/mail relay, which is out of the Nagios support scope.

Contacts are similar to Nagios XI users but not the same. Please, read more on the topic here:

That is why the are sending from root@localhost. As per standard contacts and core usage, notification sent to a contact must use the default handler that uses your system default mailer. You must configure your default mailer to alter the mailing address. This is not a nagios specific item, just to be clear. If you were to use users that were also contacts, instead of contacts, it would allow the entire configuration via the nagios interface instead of having to manage the local mailer settings.
