Monitor connectivity duration

I have users who get disconnect after an interval of inactivity (or sometimes during activity). There is no connection problem, so nagios reports 100% availability. Is there a way to determine how long a service was connected and perhaps even have warn/error depending on duration? Services are SSH and TELNET to Mainframe.

Are you currently monitoring this, if so what are you using? There are a number of helpful plugins on our exchange site, and something to keep in mind is if you can script it, nagios can monitor it:
