Traps,NSCA check results, or NRDP results?

Which of these is easiest to set up and where can I find step by step documentation?

They are all very well documented, I would recommend giving NRDP a try, that or NSCA would be the easiest to configure, out of those, NRDP is the easiest to manage (arguably). You can use the NCPA agent to set up passive NRDP checks:
