Yes, that is totally possible, just click on Manage Hostgroups in the host's CCM page, and assign your groups there.

You can assign a host to as many hostgroups as you wish. Hostgroups are nothing more than a logical grouping of hosts and has the ability to be chained.

Example

Hostgroup A has the following servers.
Alpha
Beta
Charlie

Hostgroup B has the following servers
Delta
Echo

You can chain Hostgroup B to Hostgroup A and as far as nagios is concerned, Hostgroup B will have all five servers.

I also should note that host and service groups should be used for management, not configuration. Templates are for making config changes to a large number of objects.
