nagios core student pnp4nagios setup docs

Post by sangamc »

Hi All,

I have been using Nagios open source for several years and finally decided to get the student edition for the core config manager. What a brilliant move. Totally improved my quality of life except for one thing. I can not find docs for setting up pnp4nagios.

On my old system it was realtively easy to setup, on this new one, I can not get any graphs for anything except the default localhost that is part of the sample config. If anyone knows where I can find relative docs for Nagios core student, that would be great. On the pnp4nagios website the docs reference the open source edition and so far following them I have only been able to get as far as the PNP debugger showing

Using /usr/local/nagios/share/perfdata/
RRDTool /usr/bin/rrdtool found.
RRDTool /usr/bin/rrdtool is executable

You most likely need to make sure that your nagios monitored objects are using the pnp host/service template.
Could you post your:
1. nagios.cfg
2. and a sample of the configs that are not working?

I have the host-pnp and service-pnp templates from my old nagios installation. I copied them so that the hosts have the link to click on to display graphs.

Here is my nagios.cfg from the core config manager

Here is the config for the server I am trying to graph HDD space for. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks...

Sorry for the long delay in posting, i just realized as a new forum user I get delays until the moderators get a chance to look at my posts.

define host {
host_name Hialeah-PDC
use linux-server
alias Hialeah PDC Server
address 10.x.x.13
parents Hialeah
hostgroups MIL-0803
contact_groups admins
register 1
}

define service {
host_name Hialeah-PDC
service_description Check Disk /data
use generic-service,srv-pnp
check_command check_disk!/data!80%!90%!!!!!
max_check_attempts 3
check_interval 10
retry_interval 2
check_period 24x7

No worries on the delays. So to start off since it seems you have previous configs that might be going in here. Have you tried using the config manager and pnp that is already installed on the system? Your student VM comes with everything needed for pnp, and should be installed. However if you are moving existing configs in place, its entirely possible that they don't quite fit with the new system.
