Absolutely. Clicking the statuses in the upper right hand corner of the host/service details page will allow you to apply filters. Click the X circled in your screenshot to clear filters.

ok that helps, anyway to modify the filter so that instead of Service = Critical, I can introduce my own match for alerts that are Production? If not no biggie, I've created a dashboard for the NOC to look at production alerts.

Those filters only apply to statuses. You would have to use the Hostgroup Summary page on the left-hand sidebar in order to apply those filters to a certain group.
