Metrics not displaying

Post by Fred Kroeger »

I have a couple of Metrics that display "No Matching data to display" when I select them - CPU Usage & Memory Usage .
I have not selected any Hostgroup/Servicegroup to limit the display.

Do the Service names need to be in a specific format to be picked up for the metrics display? eG; I have named the services "CPU Usage - Linux" & "CPU Used - Wintel "

Is it possible for me to add other metrics to the droplist?

regards..... Fred

Are you talking about the Metrics component? Or just general performance graphs? It sounds like these services should be providing performance data to be graphed, you can check by navigating to their details page, then clicking the Advanced tab. Here, check for data in the "Performance Data:" section.

I am referring to the Metrics Component. I can see all my performance graphs OK via Host Graphs and Graph Explorer.
I select Metrics from the Details Menu in the left pane. The Metric dropdown box has predefined Metrics to Select ( Disk Usage, CPU Usage, Memory Usage, Load & Swap)
I get "No Matching data to display" when I select CPU Usage or Memory Usage

The "Metrics" component is quite limited. It would only show you the metrics monitored "by default" if you used our wizards. For the CPU and Memory Usage in particular, I believe, it would only show the checks added by the Windows Server (or Desktop) Monitoring Wizard.

That certainly is very "limited" especially as we monitor much more than Windows servers,
plus I have renamed the Windows Monitors to use our standard terminology (CPU Utilisation)
Are there any plans to enhance it's capabilities to at least allow you to define a list of service names that can be used with this component?

Enhancing the Metrics component has been considered a several times in the past as far as I know, but it never took place, because it would be extremely complicated and time consuming project. I am not a developer, so I am not sure how we are going to go about this (maybe rewriting the code from scratch?).

I have monitors called Memory Usage which won't display in the Metrics page.
Can you tell me what the names of the service monitors are for each of the options that you can select?

Disk Usage
CPU Usage
Memory Usage
Load
Swap

thanks.... Fred

Hello,

I don't want to hijack your thread, but I do like to comment:

Not only does the metrics component only work with the predefined service names from the Windows server monitoring wizard, it also does not work with nrpe, only wth check_nt. I made feature request for this 26/11/2013 => http://tracker.nagios.com/view.php?id=471

My thought on this is that at this moment this component is not usable at all and just takes valuable space on the Nagios XI homepage. There should at least be an option to not show it. Nagios XI users now see the Metrics page and want to use, while it does not work as
1) we use nrpe and not check_nt
2) We are not using the default naming of the server wizard

Why do I not use the default naming => I like to use prefixes for each type of service, because services are listed alphabetically
DRV_ => All disk related services
PFC_ => All performance counters
SRV_ => All server info, such as CPU, Memory, Ping and Uptime
SVC_ => All Service related services
EVT_ => All Passive eventlog receiving services

I can imagine rewriting the component is a lot of work, but having a non (or barely) working component on the homepage of Nagios XI is not really user friendly.

Grtz

Willem

Just to give you heads up - there is an internal task about improving the Metrics component (TASK ID 3372). Our developers are looking into this.
