i believe there's an autoconf macro that can determine whether or not
the libraries are necessary. for example, in another program i ported
to solaris, i did the following:

AC_SEARCH_LIBS([gethostbyname], [nsl])

and

AC_SEARCH_LIBS([inet_ntoa], [nsl],,,[socket])
