other than using the email to acknowledge the alerts and add comments,
is there a way to add comments directly in the Nagios web interface other than doing this from the backend?

Yes, by using the Acknowledge button on your hosts/services. You can also use the notes component:

or does each host only have 1 comment or acknowledgement available?

Click the Advanced tab, then click "See this host in Nagios Core". Then you can enter a comment from this page and it will show up in XI.
