Cannot select host group, gray but not =>

I am configuring a new host in CCM. When I "Manage Hostgroups" the group I want to select is gray. There is no => indication. I go back to NagiosXI, Host Detail, Configure, Reconfigure, Groups, and nothing is selected.

I've set up several hosts and don't know why this one is being difficult. Where else should I look? I've only been setting hostgroup in CCM so don't know where else it could be...

Is the host already assigned to that hostgroup through it's own configuration, you should only see greyed out objects when they are already assigned from their end.

I checked the host definition in CCM, and from NagiosXI. The hostgroups are blank or unchecked (depending on the GUI) so the host should not be in any group at this point. I can add it to other hostgroups but not to the one group that I need it to be in. In NagiosXI host configuration I can pick the group but I normally assign the hostgroup in CCM and would prefer to keep it that way for consistency...

By host configuration do you mean Home > Hosts > 'Hostname' > Reconfigure??

Is this only happening with one of your hosts? As I mentioned, especially if this is an isolated issue this is more than likely caused by the same configuration "host/hostgroup" being assigned from one or the other's configuration page in the CCM.
