NagiosXI SNMP Trap same IP different Host

Post by mlopez »

Hi All,
I'm currently in the process of testing Nagios XI Enterprise to replace a previous monitoring system and wondering if you would be able to answer a couple of questions.

Our environment is only passive snmp traps with over 1,000 hosts and 45 SNMP Trap OID's per.

I have a couple of hosts which have snmp trap servers which redirect the snmp traps from multiple machines and wondering if I could associate same IP, same hostname but a unique indicator depending on Alert information.

Example:
Trap 1:
IP: 10.10.10.10
HOST: Goliath_National_Bank
System Name:BANK_NEWYORK
Description: RDP
Object Value: OFF

Trap 2:
IP: 10.10.10.10
HOST: Goliath_National_Bank
System Name:BANK_CHICAGO
Description: RDP
Object Value: OFF

As you can see in the example I have the same IP and same HOST but the differential indicator is System Name, I want to be able to create 2 hosts with same IP but if System name which comes in the SNMP Trap is different associate to the different host / service accordingly.

Sincerely,
Michael

This sounds like a good use for trap forwarding in NSTI, a new version is due to be released pretty soon, if you'd like to read up on it:

I believe you have the ability to do what you are talking about with NSTI, though I will have to confirm this with the dev, you may be able to split them by the host header there.

Hi slansing,
Thanks again for the reply and you are bang on, I was actually reading about version 2 yesterday night and yes this would do what I am looking for. The biggest thing would be to show all alerts not the most recent one. NTSI2 has a feature which I was reading about that will stick any new alerts unless marked as "READ". I only saw a beta link available in April 16, 2013 http://labs.nagios.com/2013/04/16/nagio ... nsti-v2-0/ but I was reading a post on the nagios forums posted on Thu Jan 30, 2014 10:30 am http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtop ... 22&t=25346 which advised there were some delays, in the mean time I will just utilize NTSI 1.4.

Thanks again slansing for all your help and support, you may close the thread as resolved as I will be looking at the previous nagios post for updates.

And thanks again for this amazing product! I will soon be supporting it :)

Sincerely,
Michael
