When I add a new node to nagios does it send email alerts?

When I add a new node to nagios does it send email alerts automatically for services I am monitoring?
Or do I have to manually tell it which services to send me emails for?
also how do i go about doing this step-by-step?

You would need to turn notifications on, on that service/host, and also set the proper intervals, and contacts on it as well. This is covered pretty decently here:
