Ops Screen showing items in Reoccuring Down.

Post by mberkley »

We are using the Recurring Downtime feature to suppress alerts from our server farm during peak time.

The notifications are not being distributed, but the alerts are still on the Operations screen....

Any way that we can correct this?

I think this is *technically* working as intended, but probably not like one would expect. As I understand it, an alert is different from a notification - the alert is the event that triggers the notification. So while the alert is still occurring, no notification actually goes out. I may be wrong on this, but from what I have seen in the past this seems to be the case (although we tend to use the term alert and notification interchangeably). This makes sense because an alert may not always need to notify - maybe it just needs to log to a database or appear on-screen (as opposed to appearing in your inbox).

I will talk to the developers about getting this fixed, as well as clarifying my thoughts on the alert vs notification part.

Edit: Could you provide a screenshot of the page for reference?

I definitely understand your explanation between alerts and notifications. Forgive me for being so lax with my terminology.
What we are hoping to do is suppress the alerts AND notifications of services that we have elected for a recurring downtime so it doesn't fill our operations screen.

The parameters that we have set:

And here is our operations screens. It still (and for the right reasons) is still displaying all the alerts that the servers are triggers (which we are trying to supress)

I went ahead and filed an internal feature request for this. If it does get implemented (I can't imagine why it would be denied) I would think it would be an option as opposed to hiding them by default.
