huge amount of logs created on vcenter - Monitoring VMware

Post by RIDS_I2MP »

Hi Team,

We have recently configured monitoring for VMware hosts using nagios to monitor the datastore usage. Our VMware/Vcenter admin has pointed that the nagios user created for monitoring is creating 1000's of events in the vcenter using the vl perl agent. Could you please advice on how we can stop perl agent to stop creating event/logs on the vcenter.
Thanks & Regards,
I2MP Team.

Which plugin are you using? Im having similar issues, but I heard there is no 'solution' for it. It does not seem to impact performance though.

I would have to ask the same question as WillemDH.

Are you just using the VMWare wizard?

If so, this plugin just pulls from the VMWare API. I guess if you do not want those queries logged, the logging would need to be disabled on the vCenter server.

Yes, we are just using the VMware Wizard (I believe it uses check_esx3.pl). I will check with my team and understand if the logging can be disabled form their end. It doesn't effect the performance but since the amount of logging is so high our team has a chance of missing out some genuine alerts.

Do you have any sort of log monitoring solution in place currently?

No, we don't have one..!!

Would you able to provide the steps involved in disabling the logging on the Vcenter end?

For that you would need to work with your VM team. We can definitely help with the Nagios side of things, however. Very broadly I found the following with a quick Google:

You might be interested in trialing Nagios Logserver. It would be pretty easy to filter these messages out if they can be sent there:

This is the exact reason we switched to Troy's VMWare plugin: http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Pl ... re/details
Our VM admins didn't want to turn off logging since it can be very useful for other issues, but the constant login and logout logs from Nagios were making their logs impossible to read. If you've got decent enough specs on your vMAs it'd be worth it too look into Troy's plugin. It works very well and comes with the most descriptive manual of all time. :P
