Check Error, SSL Handshake and Return Code 255

Hello,

I created a new service in order to monitor the free space of unit C: for windows server and attached it to different hosts. Some of them worked like a charm they look ok and send properly the status, but, on the other hand, there're a small amount that are giving error:

- (Return code of 255 is out of bounds) --> This error is returned by server with NSClient++ version 0.4.1.105
- CHECK_NRPE: Error - Could not complete SSL handshake. --> This error is returned by servers with NSClient++ Version: 0.3.9.328

I googled those errors, just for give a try solving them, but all solutions given are not working.

The hosts which are returning those errors have other services configured and working properly.

Here is the service details:

I followed found solutions like allowed_host, enabling NRPE SSL and allowing arguments, but nothing changed.

You were right regarding the port. Looks like version 0.41 default port is 8899, once I changed it to 5666 worked properly. I had to add a -n in the check since it was giving the SSL Handshake error even taking out the use_ssl = 1.

I do have the allowed_hosts=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX in the [Settings] section. This appends to all sections if not defined in them, right?

Regarding version 0.39, I have still 3 servers giving the following error:

Stop here and now with the thought that it's actually an SSL problem - it's not. This is unfortunately just the error you get when you have communication problems.

I would highly recommend upgrading to 4.1 or newer (preferably the newest). The reason is that this problem is difficult to troubleshoot mostly because it's using the old style configs and the older modules that are missing some components. It's possible that CheckDriveSize didn't exist in the version you're using. It's hard to be certain because the documentation has vanished from the Internet (mostly)

To check that, try your check_nrpe with only the -H argument and see what you get... that's a good place to start your troubleshooting.

I tried to update the client to the newer version, but that messed up the checks that are already configured in the hosts. I'l give another chance updating it today.

Answering your recommendations, here are the results on executing the check_nrpe plainly:

From this point I recommend you straight copy the nsclient.ini file from your working host(s) to the non-working host(s). Get check_nrpe -H <upgraded host> working then from there we'll work on getting your broken services plunked back in.

Also note all 4.0+ versions of nsclient use the same nsclient.ini config file syntax. I strongly recommend you get all your hosts to a more current version so you're not maintaining both the old style and the new style config files. 0.3.x has been deprecated by the developer for some time.
