Receive notification by email and activate alert in Nagios

Hello
I want to undestand what kind of alert methods Nagios have.
The reason is that an external system (that is not accessible to us ) would send us a communication via email to inform about status of something.
I need to process the email (via Nagios ?) and based on the content, send an alert. The message will be stored in Nagios too.
