If I am correct in assuming that AMI is based on RHEL, you have a lot of options. The easiest and most popular way to monitor a Linux box with Nagios is NRPE. Here is one document we provide (it's for XI, but the same ideas still apply) with instructions for installing NRPE. This is a good writeup, but not an official one we wrote.
