Notifications...default contact ?

Post by vijilants »

Nagios XI Version : 2014R2.7

Hi,

Can someone please advise me on what "Default Contact (xi_default_contact)" refers to against the tickbox in notifications for services in Nagios XI ?

Is this so that the notification of an event is seen in the notifications page but not emailed out to anyone ?

Many Thanks

Are you referring to running a config wizard? If so, the xi_default_contact is set to root@localhost on an XI system. Normally there is no reason to send to this contact, it's just there because nagios will complain if there is not at least one contact in place.

Thanks for the reply and yes, when running a config wizard, the notifications screen carries that default xi option in the box of email choices.

The reason I am asking is because we usually use the notifications screen to see if there have been any overnight events. However if there are no emal addresses assigned to a service, will the event still arrive in the notification screen ?

If not, what would you suggest is the best way of looking for all overnight events that may have occured on the network ?

Many Thanks

No. You will need to have a monitoring contact assigned to the service in order for nagios to send a notification. Other words, if you don't have a contact added to this service, it won't show up under "Notifications", however it will still show as an "SERVICE ALERT" in the "Event Log". Hope this helps.

Sorry but I'm not clear about this. So say in the morning you wish to check for any network probems that occured overnight, what is the quickest and easiest way to perform this task ?

It depends on your preferences. You can go to Reports->Event Log and search for "alert" or you can go to "Reports->State History".

Thank you .....That was very helpful...I'd never used the State history report before.
