Monitor Win 7 client services

New to Nagios XI, although I have a simple Nagios core setup and demoing Nagios XI to see if it makes sense to purchase


How do you add monitoring services and processes for Win 7 clients? I've read to use the add Windows Server wizard, is this the best practice or do I resort to manually modifying files?

The Windows wizard will get you started with some basic checks. If you want to do anything more advanced, it's much easier to use the core configuration manager to make changes.

I appreciate the link, but it doesn't explicitly state how to do this in Nagios XI core config manager (service management)

Looking at the existing service checks isn't giving me quite enough information.

I actually understand how it works better in regular Nagios core. Is there anyone with screenshots of even the simplest (say monitoring of explorer.exe) so I can understand how to do this in NagiosXI?

Well, when it comes to monitoring explorer.exe, this very easy to accomplish via the Windows Server Wizard - you can still apply that to a Win client machine, just don't enable the checks unique to a server, such as ISS of course. The Windows Server Wizard has by default some check boxes to monitor services and process which the Windows client Wizard does not have.

Ah.. ok. This is what I had been wondering. If I need to monitor more than just the basic items such as disk space, ping, and CPU, can I just use the Windows server wizard, or is there some reason that this will not work...

I am fine to use the CCM, and I know exactly what I want to do, but I dont quite know the correct syntax and how to accomplish this.

Let me use the Windows Server Wizard and see if that doesnt do the trick.

Take a look and try it out. Post back if you have any further questions regarding how to do this. The core configuration manager can be a beast at first, but it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
