Host/Service Discovery?

Hello everyone...

I'm entirely new to Nagios...
I previously installed Nagios XI and was able to run discovery on a subnet, find all the hosts with their corresponding open ports and just check them to start monitoring all the remotely monitor-able items such as HTTP, SMTP, etc...

Then I realized NagiosXI requires a license. I destroyed the server and reinstalled Nagios Core (hard lesson learned).
Now I further realized that it's not as easy anymore... I can't seem to find an "Auto Discovery" option... does this mean I have to create an object file for each host that I need to monitor?

The "Auto Discovery" component and it's corresponding wizard are exclusive to Nagios XI.
