monitoring 2 servers

Post by iroy »

I have nagiosxi server software installed on 2 servers - A and B.

And I want server A to also monitor server B.

And server B to monitor server A.

Do I need to install NRPE on the 2 servers.

NRPE would be one solution. However, the Nagios XI Server configuration wizard doesn't require NRPE to be installed on the remote XI machine. It just uses the Nagios XI credentials.

The recommended method is to introduce a 3rd "offsite Nagios XI instance" dedicated to monitoring servers A and B - this doc explains how its done. In this scenario you don't need NRPE or any other client side agents as there is a built in component for such.

You could install the XI Linux Agent
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... _Agent.pdf
which is a version of NRPE and plugins designed to work with the Linux wizard.

Additionally, you can run the Nagios XI Server wizard to get several additional metrics without installing any agent.

Before it gets closed, I'd just like to point out that you never said what you wanted to monitor. If you just want A to ping B to see if it's up, then treat B just like any other host. Same for web service, SSH, any anything else that you can check "from the outside."
