Migrate XI from Redhat 6.8 to CenTOS 6.8

Post by toper »

Hi,
We want to change our XI 5.2.9 from Redhat 6.8 x64 to a new install on Centos 6.8 x64.

This is an XI installation back from 2012, but upgraded all the time.

I think just do :
- Upgrade current XI to latest 3.0
- Run nagiosxi backup script
- New basic Centos install on new server
- Install latest XI on new server
- Restore backup from nagiosxi restore script

- do i have to think about license problems ?
- are everything in the backup when i restore ?
- any other other things to worry about ?

Thanks,
Peter Calum,

Latest XI is 5.3.0. For best results, the restore should be done on the same version as the backup was made on. From there you can upgrade the latest XI version. So install 5.2.9 on the CentOS system, restore the backup then run the 5.3.0 upgrade.

Licensing could be an issue depending on your circumstance. Usually it is enough to simply reuse the IP from original install.

As with any major undertaking, a complete backup should be done prior to any other work.

More details on backup/restore are listed here.

Peter,

I'm wondering why you would choose to migrate to CentOS 6. Migrating all that stuff takes time and considering in 4 years support for CentOS 6 ends, it might be a good idea to consider making the step to CentOS 7? It would save you a lot of work in 4 years?

Code: Select all

20. What is the support ''end of life'' for each CentOS release?

CentOS 3
CentOS-3 updates until October 31, 2010
CentOS 4
CentOS-4 updates until February 29, 2012
CentOS 5
CentOS-5 updates until March 31, 2017
CentOS 6
CentOS-6 updates until November 30, 2020
CentOS 7
CentOS-7 updates until June 30, 2024
Not sure if restoring a backup from CentOS 6 to 7 server is tested and supported by Nagios?

Yes it is. The backup/restore method detailed above is agnostic about OS Major Release and arch.

Hi All

Thanks you for your answers, I'll consider to move to CentOS 7.
And the install will be made on a new server with same IP, so i can easily fall back.
