Upgrade path CentOS 6 to CentOS 7

A year or two back we tried to upgrade our Nagios XI installation to CentOS7. We tried doing this by building a new CentOS 7 server, backing up the original DB and restoring it to the new server with a fresh Nagios install. This caused several problems at the time and I was advised it would not work due to a change in DB software. The original server has been around a while and has been upgraded in place. If I remember correctly it is still using the older DB method which is the cause of the issue.
With all that said my question is this, is there a documented upgrade path to get around this issue or are we left with building a new server and re-configuring? We would like to migrate our service configurations and data to a new Nagios XI installation on a CentOS 7 server.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.
