Nagios XI - older 044 client works newest one doesn't

Nagios newbie here, first posting please be gentle if I am asking soemthing a bit simple!
Loaded Nagios XI 5.4.12 so it's the latest version.
I loaded the linked client which happens to be v0.4.4 on a server here, and setup the config wizard, and it all works fine - the default monitors show up green. I then unloaded that client, rebooted, then loaded the latest v0.5.2 client. I chose exactly the same parameters as previously - same password, same tick boxes, and same Allowed hosts. Now only the ping works - everything else red.
To make sure I'm not being really dumb I uninstalled 052 and rebooted, then installed 044 again. All green. Rebooted, all green. Uninstalled, rebooted, installed 052 again, rebooted again to be sure, all red. The server is on a LAN so it's not an external firewall. C:\Program Files\NSClient++\nscp.exe is in the windows firewall OK.
Is this just a case of "don't use the latest client as it's not compatible with XI"?
many thanks
