Sites with poor connections generating UNKNOWN alerts

Post by cstarr »

Hi all, I have two remote sites connected over VPNs that have poor internet connections. The behavior I'm seeing from Nagios is that the Ping check to the server's IP remains up but the service checks periodically time out generating UNKNOWN status alerts for all the checks on that server, they recover pretty much instantly thus generating an equal number of status OK alerts. Is there any way to get the UNKNOWN to recheck before it generates an alert?

Hello, @cstarr. You can probably resolve this issue by adding a custom timeout value to your service checks.

But also, another way is to increase the "retry interval"(Nagios will take longer to recheck the service before sending an email), and increase the "Max Check Attempts"(Nagios will recheck the service X amount of times before sending out an email).
