Recommended Upgrade Path for Nagios XI 2012R2.2

Hello,

We need to upgrade our the current Nagios XI version to the latest one 5.4.13-64
Is there a recommended upgrade path (in-place upgrade or build new one and an export/import - backup/restore?)
Are there any pitfalls?

What version of Nagios XI are you using? Nagios XI 2012R2.2
Linux Distribution and version? CentOS release 6.3 (Final)
32 or 64bit? 64 bit
VMware Image or Manual Install of XI? vmware image (ovf template)
