No notifications for some hosts after upgrade

I'm having a very peculiar issue after installing from scratch Nagios 4.4.1 on a FreeNAS jail (FreeBSD 11.1), I copied over my previous 4.3.x configuration. All is working fine except notifications to some existing hosts. Some mail notifications were being received, then my phone app showed an issue while I had not received the notice. I found none were going out for a few different hosts. I cleared any deprecated messages by updates and there are no error messages or log of attempted mail. Newly created hosts and some existing hosts are notifying just fine. After struggling with it, I renamed the subject hosts and now they notify.

I don't want to have to rename all my hosts, could someone suggest what the issue may be or if some sort of cache exists that can be cleared?

there were a few issues with 4.4.1 that could cause this situation, I would strongly encourage upgrading to 4.4.2
