I am currently running Nagios XI 2014R2.5 and want to upgrade. Can I do a in place upgrade? If so, what are the steps to accomplish this.

A couple things to consider since you are running an older version of Nagios XI.
1. Be sure to make a backup.
2. If you are using a VM, please create a snapshot before upgrading.
