Notifications

Post by gregwhite »

I have a question of notifications and time periods. We have a group with two different notification requirements for the same devices. I was thinking of creating two templates. One for each time period. Then adding the devices to both templates. Is this the best way to handle a scenario like this?

Thanks,
Greg

Hello, @gregwhite. No, that's not going to work. Adding the device to two different templates will just mix the settings. What kind of notification requirements do you have for the contact groups?
But generally speaking, there could be two solutions. One is to create duplicate service and host checks for different contact groups. And the second one is two create two simultaneous notification escalations for two contact groups:

What I was trying to accomplish is this:
From 7am to 6pm page the Telecom group at 15 minute intervals until acknowledged
From 6pm to 7am page the Telecom group at 30 minute intervals until acknowledged.

@gregwhite, You should try setting up 2 host and service escalations with two custom time periods in XI.
The first escalation would be from 7 am to 6 pm, Notification interval 15 minutes, escalation options Warning and Critical, First Notification 1, Last notification 0.
The second escalation would be from 6 pm to 7 am, same settings but the interval should be 30 minutes.

If you want this to apply to services too then you need to create a similar service escalation.

Sorry, Just to confirm. You are saying 2 escalations. So I would remove notifications from my template and go directly to 2 escalations, each doing a specific time period.

@gregwhite, You should still have regular notification settings under templates because service escalations only kick in on the n-th notification. So if notifications are not enabled in the first place then escalations won't start.
Once the escalations become active regular notifications automatically pause.
Here's what you can do. Set up regular notifications to the Telecom group at a 30-minute interval. And set up one escalation for the time period from 7 am to 6 pm at a 15-minute interval. If the escalation becomes active regular notifications will stop and you should be receiving emails at 15-minute interval only.
