The recommended hardware requirements for 10000 checks

Post by axvers »

Hi support,

I have checked this doc: https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ements.pdf.

But still wondering that what if I have around 8000~10000 checks need to be done, what is the recommended hardware requirement for this?

Can I just multiply them for 3 times?

for example, according to the pdf, for 3000 checks, it is recommended (at least) with 4 core/8 GB/120 GB.

Can I claim that for 9000 checks, this server at least needs to be equipped 12 core/24 GB/ 360 GB?

Thanks!

It is hard to say as each environment is different. Some checks are more "CPU intensive" than others, e.g. vmware checks, so it would make a big difference if you had many such checks in a large environment. There are way too many factors to consider in order to be able to give a definitive answer, for example:

- Is this a physical server or a virtual machine (with shared resources)?
- Are most of your checks going to be active or passive checks?
- How often are you going to be running your checks?
- How fast are your hard drives?

I would recommend that you "play safe", and exceed the hardware requirements, listed in our documentation. Hardware is cheap nowadays. Also, you would need to "fine tune" your Nagios XI server by following some of the methods, listed here:

https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... p#boosting

Lastly, try your setup in a test environment first, before applying it to production. Each Nagios XI license is approved for up to three installations: one primary monitoring/production, one backup/failover, and one test environment. As long as you are only using one install for production monitoring, you are within the boundaries of our licensing policy.
