Using external SQL server for Nagios database

Nagios XI 5.6.14 - Can the mariadb mysql be moved to an external MSSQL database server and if it can, what would the process be to move it off the mariadb to the external MSSQL server?

Yes, you can offload mysql/mariadb to a external server. Please read more on the topic in the KB article listed below:
