Hi all,

I'm looking to replace our solarwinds implementation with Nagios for a few reasons. The problem I'm running into is all the options and legacy documentation. I'm currently eyeballing Nagios Core, running NRDP, and NCPA. Is this a typical setup? I've been bounced between NRPE and NSCA, then I learn that NCPA is a thing. I'm just trying to find the bottom of the worm hole for planning before I do any further work on implementation.

So I guess the question is, if you were to roll out a Nagios Core installation today, how would you do it?

Also, anybody have experience with Nagios XI vs Nagios Core?

That really depends on your environment, how large it is, and what types of service checks you want to set up. For running checks via an agent, NCPA is the recommended application.

For configuring passive checks, then I would use NRDP instead of NSCA as it is a newer application the uses HTTP for communications. NCPA can also be setup passively to communicate check results over NRDP.

If you going to be monitoring a large network, Nagios XI is going to be much easier to manage and configure. We do have a 30-day trial available with access to the support team for help.
