Is there a best practices page somewhere?

Post by jbruyet »

Hey all, my Nagios server is growing and I'm learning more about it every week. I'm to the point that I'm starting to have trouble with setting up additional monitoring. For example, I have a .cfg file for servers, one for workstations, one for switches, etc... that does basic monitoring. I'm trying to set up monitoring of devices with similar configurations like servers running a SQL server or servers running Backup Exe but I'm getting "duplicate" warnings when I do my -v test flights. I've tried a couple of times to do a hosts.cfg file with everything in it and then do groups for the actual monitoring but I get more errors (I know it's vague but I've wiped the server and I'm starting over again). Is there a Nagios Best Practices web page somewhere that can help a Nagios Padawan learner get more out of Nagios without increasing its level of complexity? I've created a second Nagios server for experimenting so I'm willing to give pretty much anything a shot.

Thanks,

Joe B

Most books on Nagios will include information on best practices, and I found this article after a quick search (which I have not read). However, there is no definitive resource on the topic. Different environments will usually lead you towards organizing your monitoring system in different ways, so it's difficult to come up with very many guidelines without a long list of caveats.

EDIT: There's also Time-Saving Tricks For Object Definitions.
