NagiosXI socket timeout after 120 seconds

Hi ,
Need some advise as we are currently facing issues whereby we are receiving errors for certain segments as below.
'CHECK_NRPE: Socket timeout after 120 seconds.'
Checks we have done from Nagios server as below.
1) ping - successful
2) telnet port 5666 - connected
3) traceroute - able to reach the destination server
Client server checks as below
1) port 5666 is listening
2) NRPE agent is up as well as restarted for good measure
3) 'check_nrpe -H localhost' - returns the NRPE version
We have checked firewall as well as network, we do not see any errors, yet we are still facing this issue. Please advise what other checks we can do to identify the issue.
