Clients Disapearing from Configuration

Post by stevekcnet »

I appologize in advance if this has been discussed before; however, it is a recurring issue and I cannot find a solution.
It was pointed out to me today that several clients had disapeared from our Nagios installation. Upon checking, Feb 1, 2013 they were all there and on Feb 2 they had disapeared. This issue had occured once before, and it was only a handful of clients, so I reentered their information and all was well. Now I have lost 60+ clients and I have been through log files and every possible search to find a solution for this problem with no luck. We are running version 3.2.3. I would appreciate any help on this issue.

Thank you,
Steve

Are the "clients" contacts, hosts/services, or something else? Any information in the nagios and system logs from Feb 1st to Feb 2nd?

They are actually listed under Host Groups and I went through the logs and I found nothing that stands out

So you lost hostgroups and host configs? Have you checked the actual config file locations?

yes each "host" represents an individual clients piece of equipment, and as stated previously and for some unknown reason they just disapear...it is like they have been deleted from the config file. We have three types of wireless equipment out in the field plus the core services like AP's etc that Nagios monitors. It is like it just erases them from the config file. As mentioned this happen one other time but the ones that were removed were minimal and I didn't think much of it, however now the total is over 60.

Do you have any remote configuration services in your network (puppet etc)? Do you use any kind of backup/restore applications for your nagios system? Do you use nagiosql?
Configs do not change themselves (at least in core without nagiosql), so this is most likely a system related problem.

Do others have access to this server? Have you checked your access logs?

There are no remote configuration services that I am aware of. As far as the backups...this is a Fedora Core 12 build of Linux running in a VMWare session. It is backed up on a regular basis, it was handed off to me sometime ago and I had to muck through everything as the person that built up this system is no longer with us. So it was a learn as you go type senario. It is using nagios sql there are no external sql databases associated with this install. And yes I have check to see if there has been any access to this system and it has only been myself!
