Nagios XI - Exploring the Graph Explorer

Summary

Nagios XI includes several options for visualizing the data returned by your hosts and services. The Graph Explorer Component provides a powerful way to generate custom visualizations.

Getting Started with Graph Explorer

Accessing the Graph Explorer page

Navigate to the Nagios XI Web GUI and log in. Graph explorer is located under 'Home -> Performance Graphs -> Graph Explorer'.

Navigating the Graph Explorer page

Note that there are several tabs, which are laid out in order of complexity:

  • Top Alerts Last 24hrs

  • Host Health

  • Service Health

  • Scalable Performance Graph

  • Time Stacked Performance Graph

  • Multistacked Performance Graph

Each tab identifies a different type of Graph. We will explore each tab and identify what the graph is capable of.

Basic Functionality

Common Features

Within the Graph Explorer Component, there are several options shared between all of the graphs that are generated.

  • Select Host

    • Allows you to select a specific host
  • Select Service

    • Once the host has been selected you can choose the specific service
  • Select Data Type

    • Services can output multiple performance data, commonly referred to datasources. Here you can select a specific datasource.
  • Time Period

    • Change the range that you want the graph to display
  • Dashify Icon

    • This is the icon that appears in the top left of all the graphs. Clicking this icon allows you to add this graph to a dashboard to review later.

Basic Graphs

Top Alert Producers

This graph displays the top alert producers in the last 24 hours - this graph is primarily intended to be added to a dashboard for convenience.

Host Health

This graph displays the health of every host added to Nagios in the form of a pie graph - this graph is primarily intended to be added to a dashboard.

Service Health

This graph displays the health of every host added to Nagios in the form of a pie graph - this graph is primarily intended to be added to a dashboard.

Scalable Performance Graph

This graph is what you see in your host and service objects by default. Here you can view a larger graph of the host or service as well as being able to select individual datasources.

Advanced Graphs

Time Stacked Performance Graph

This graph allows you to overlay a graph from the past 3 time frames. For example, if it was the last three weeks you would see three graphs for:

  • 21 days - 14 days

  • 14 days - 7 days

  • 7 days - now

This is a handy graph to compare historic behaviour compared to current behaviour to identify trends.

Multistacked Performance Graph

This graph allows you to create a graph from multiple hosts / services. This is useful for comparing metrics which have a correlation to each other. This example shows "memory usage" and "open files". You can also change the type of graph such as area or line.
