I was wondering if I would encounter any problems upgrading to Nagios XI 2014R1.0 before I start the installation and if I would need to update my database structure on my offloaded MySQL Server.

There are some sql changes, but as long as your offloaded db was configured per our documentation, the sql should be dumped to the remote db. The settings in nagios.cfg are also respected, so the ramdisk should not be an issue as well.
